Kitwe Teaching Hospital has conducted the first Arterial – Venous Fistula (AVF). AVF is an operation done on patients undergoing renal dialysis in order to facilitate their treatment.
Previously, patients from Kitwe were being referred to the University Teaching Hospitals (UTH), or the hospital would invite a Surgeon from UTH to carry out this type of operation.
After a training conducted by a United Kingdom based Non-Governmental Organization called OUT TO AFRICA through the surgical Society of Zambia, the hospital, through the Surgery department, successfully carried out this operation.
The hospital plans to have fully established services for chronic kidney disease patients.
